Welcome to Palmas, the capital of Tocantins; the newest Brazilian state, located in the North of the country and with great influence also from the Central-West and Northeast regions. Arrival and transfer to the hotel and free time. Rooms will be available from 3 pm.

2ND DAY: PALMAS – JALAPÃO – PINDORAMA DO TOCANTINS (240 km: 201 km on asphalt + 39 km off road)

Today, we begin our expedition! Between 06:30 and 07:30 check out at the hotel in Palmas and departure to start the Expedition. Remember that this is an expedition and most of the trip will be on unpaved roads (off road) and that each traveller can take 1 backpack of up to 20 litters. Large luggage or suitcases with wheels are not permitted, and will not be transported by our team; therefore, pay close attention when preparing your luggage!

Visits of the day: Lagoa do Japonês, Pedra Furada.

Lagoa do Japonês

We will enter the Jalapão State Park, with its 159 thousand hectares, and explore its beauty and natural riches. Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, swimwear, sunglasses, UV-protective t-shirt, diving goggles, and charged batteries to take lots of photos!

Ready to “disconnect” from the world? In Jalapão, for most of the trip, there will be no telephone or internet access, so be prepared to disconnect from the world and connect with nature! Close to cities/inns, there is the possibility of telephone/internet connection; The operator with the best coverage in the region is Claro.

Between 06:30 and 07:30 check out at the hotel in Palmas and departure to start the Expedition. We will continue towards Pindorama, where we will visit Lagoa do Japonês, an oasis in the middle of the cerrado, with its crystal clear waters, accessible through a deck with stairs, where the fish come to welcome us; Take the opportunity to swim with your diving goggles and discover the beauty of this beautiful lagoon, which also has an arm of the river that gives access to a cave, where it is possible to appreciate rock formations sculpted by time and integrated into the vegetation; But be careful, as close to the cave, the lagoon is deeper. Due to the rock formations at the bottom of the lagoon, we advise you to enter the lagoon, using a rug or “crocs”, for greater comfort. Optionally, there is the possibility of going over the lagoon on a zipline and thus enjoying the beautiful view (subject to availability).

Gruta Lagoa do Japonês

Our lunch today will be near the lagoon, at Dona Minervina’s family restaurant or Restaurante da Lagoa do Japonês, with a typical homemade meal, prepared by the family on a wood stove; we will taste the typical free-range chicken, sun-dried meat and salads from the backyard garden. After lunch, access Dona Minervina’s “social networks”. Under a leafy mango tree, enjoy a rest in one of the hammocks available in the hammock, at the back of the property.

Pedra Furada

We will leave towards Pedra Furada, a group of sandstone blocks that reign imposingly in the cerrado; with a hole caused by erosion, resembling a portal and which allows a beautiful view of the entire region and from where, if the weather permitting, it will be possible to watch the sunset (depends on weather conditions).

We will leave towards the Pousada, located in Ponte Alta, check in and have a buffet dinner with typical foods from the region. Overnight stay.

3rd DAY – PONTE ALTA DO TOCANTINS – MATEIROS (225 km – off road)

Visits of the day: Sussuapara Canyon, Prainha do Rio Novo, Dunas do

We will leave very early, right after breakfast and today, the mountains and plateaus will accompany us throughout the day. Our first stop is at the Sussuapara Canyon, with its wavy rocks that appear to have been shaped by water; although it is not very high, this canyon is unmissable with its vegetation that runs down the walls, its small stream that crosses the rock formation and its small waterfall between a crevice, where the bravest can take advantage of a refreshing bath.

Sussuapara Canyon

We will continue to “Prainha do Rio Novo”, located in the Quilombola Community of Rio Novo, where you can have the experience of getting to know how the local inhabitants live and their customs; like bathing in clear, cool waters. Continuing this experience, we will enjoy a typical homemade lunch, with regional foods (free-range chicken, sun-dried meat, sun-dried paçoca, among others). We will visit a local ice cream shop, which produces ice cream with regional flavours such as piqui, cajá, murici, Jatobá, among others… how about trying it? Free time to enjoy the “social networks” available (restaurant hammock).

Prainha do Rio Novo

We will continue to another unmissable destination, the Jalapão Dunes, formed from the erosion of the Serra do Espírito Santo and transported by the winds, the orange sand forms dunes up to 40 meters high, presenting us with unmissable views and making the sunset unique and divine. Take the opportunity to sit on top of the dunes and enjoy the natural beauty of the region and the privileged view of the mountains.

Jalapão Dunes

Schultz tip: before climbing the dunes, use sunscreen and repellent, at the top of the dunes there are the famous “flies” (gnats, mosquitoes, etc.)! Prevent yourself.

We will continue for dinner, in a typical family restaurant in Mateiros and at the end, to the inn, located in the same city. Enjoy the sky, breathe the fresh air, close your eyes, and listen to the noise of the animals around you. Check-in and accommodation.

4TH DAY – MATEIROS – SÃO FELIX DO TOCANTINS (120 km– off-road)

Visits of the day: Fervedouros (Boilers): do Salto, Buritis, Ceiça or Por Tempo, Cachoeira do Formiga.

Fervedouro Ceiça

Breakfast. Get ready because today we will visit a lot of boiling places! Swimwear and beach towels are essential today.

Fervedouro Ceiça

But what are fervedouros (boilers)? Today, 8 boiling places are known and most of them are between Mateiros and São Felix; They are small natural pools of crystal clear waters and very fine white sand at the bottom, formed by the resurgence of water, groundwater and are bubbling incessantly, without us having an exact idea of their depth. Don’t even try to find the bottom, as you won’t be able to, as the force with which the water shoots out will make you float. It’s a unique sensation in each boiler we will visit: some smaller, others larger, with very blue or green waters, with a lot of vegetation around and others with little, with more resurgence points, or with few; They are all beautiful and it is worth diving into each of them and feeling the strength of the resurgences. Today, we will visit the following boilers: Salto boiler, Buritis boiler, Ceiça boiler or Por Tempo boiler. Between today’s visits, we will have homemade food for lunch at Fervedouro Buritis, prepared with great care by the family that preserves the boiler: rice, beans, free-range chicken, salads, fried cassava/cassava, are part of the menu; where we can also access “social networks” and take a nap under the buriti thatch roof, right next door.

Cachoeira do Formiga (Waterfall of Formiga)

Today we will also visit and be able to take a refreshing swim at Cachoeira do Formiga, with its crystal clear waters whose colors change according to the incidence of the sun, varying between emerald green and turquoise blue.

At the end of the day, we will go to dinner and then head to the Inn; take the opportunity to look at the sky; because on clear nights, a “sea” of stars illuminate the path and lead us to reflect on the immensity that surrounds us. Accommodation.

5TH DAY – SÃO FELIX DO TOCANTINS – PALMAS (260 km – 150km off-road + 110 km on asphalt)

Visits of the day: Prainha do Alecrim, Fervedouro Bela Vista, Serra da Catedral View.

Fervedouro do Alecrim

Breakfast at the inn and early departure to make the most of our last morning in Jalapão. We will visit Prainha do Alecrim, on the banks of the Soninho River, a typical beach in the Brazilian cerrado, where local inhabitants usually spend the day, during the hot weekends in the region; We will visit and have the opportunity to swim in yet another boiling point, Bela Vista, one of the largest in the region. We will return to the inn for lunch and then leave to return to Palmas; We will pass through beautiful landscapes and we will be able to appreciate the Serra da Catedral, with its shape like the front of a cathedral, sculpted by the winds and showing us yet another wonder of nature.

Serra da Catedral
